Saying Goodbye
I’m FINISHED! My exams are over and it is such a relief! I said good-bye to two of my roommates yesterday and I feel like part of my heart went with them. It’s amazing how close we got this year, and it’s hard to imagine that when we come back in the fall we won’t all be rooming together again. My emotions are up and down as we continue to empty our room. My things are scattered from one end of the room to the other. I keep procrastinating…not wanting to waste time packing when there is still time I can spend with my friends. My other two roommates leave tomorrow, and then it will be easier to dig in and box up all my belongings.
So, instead of packing, I have been recuperating from finals and bidding my friends farewell. As excited as I am to see my family, especially my little nephew who is now over a year old, I am having a hard time imagining being away from everyone at Covenant for 3 months. I was talking to a friend a while back about my fears of leaving for the summer and she said, “Although, it does feel really weird the first time, you get used to it. And when you come back, things just pick up right where they left off.” I needed to hear that.
Wow, I can’t believe it… I’m a sophomore! Life goes by so fast, doesn’t it? Another page is turned. I feel like I should be a much wiser person now…hmmm….I don’t know about that. But, I do know I’ve changed a lot this year. Will they see the changes as well…I wonder?

I’m glad you posted that. There have been a few times I’ve wondered what it will be like to come back in the fall. Hopefully things won’t be too different!

You feel you should be wiser eh? Well, seeing as how I’m also a sophomore now, I can say that we are (sadly) probably only “wise fools.”

It really does pick back up where you left off, if they are true friends. And there will be a whole new class on campus next fall, with all sorts of potential friends in that group! Take the opportunity to learn this skill–it’s important to be able to pick up and drop off at times in your relationships because that issue keeps coming back and back in life.

Hi There: Did the five of you live in a dorm on campus? Were you all the same grade? I am coming from Hawaii and am very apprehensive about the distance from home, loneliness, cliques, prejudice, cultural shock, etc. I will play soccer for Covenant’s Coach Mark Duble. I am a very sociable girl who loves to swim, surf, cruise at the Mall, & go to movies with my friends.

I’m the exact same way Donn and had the same worries when I was coming to Covenant. But really Chattenooga isn’t that far away from Covenant and not far from there there’s a mall, movie theatre, and other stuff to do. Yes, all us girls were in one room on campus. You may be thinking that it must have been crowded, but actually no. Depending on how many people you have in your room depends how big your room is. But really Donn, i know lots of the soccer girls and they are all AWESOME! You are going to have so much fun being on the team!

ALOHA SHERYCE: TNX FOR YOUR REPLY. HOW IS THE FOOD IN THE CAFETERIA? WHAT ABOUT THE TEMPERATURE RANGE ALL YEAR ROUND? HERE IN HAWAII IT RANGES FROM 54 - 90 YEAR ROUND WITH THE COLDER WEATHER IN JAN - MAR AND HOT FROM AUG - OCT. WHAT IS THE CLOSEST AIRPORT TO SCHOOL? THE ONE IN CHATANOOGA, KNOXVILLE OR NASHVILLE? I HAVE RELATIVES IN ATLANTA AND FAYETTEVILLE, NC. WHERE IS THE CLOSEST POOL SINCE I LOVE TO SWIM IF POSSIBLE? SEE YOU, DONN

Aloha Donn!
Cafeteria:
The food in the cafeteria is well cafeteria food. I mean there’s a wide variety so it doesn’t seem so bad at first, and I do like the food. But just like any cafeteria it’s easy to get sick of the same food.
Temperature wise:
Unfortunately it’s not as warm and beautiful as I’m sure hawaii is. It’s really beautiful from the time you get there until about October: then it get’s pretty cold and warms back up in like late march early april. But in the winter don’t be surprise to have weather in the 30’s and 20’s. We also tend to have rainy days, so you might want some rain boots, or something you can walk in when it rains.
Airport:
Well there’s an airport right outside of Chattenooga I know, I think it’s about 30 minutes away, which isn’t too bad and I’m pretty sure that if you need it they have shuttles that come up to the school. But I can check more on this for you.
Swimming:
Well we do have two pools on campus: one is right by the cafeteria and the other is across from the gym. Unfortunately they are outdoor pools and will be closed once it get cold.

Aloha Donn,
Elissa over at http://www.elissa.weichbrodt.org/ is also a Hawaiian who went to Covenant. I’m sure she would love to hear from you! Also, Dr. Daphne Haddad is a wonderful friend and takes all the diversity students under her wing. She’ll be a good friend and mentor to help when mainland people start making you crazy.
But I’m sure you will be fine! Covenant people have been very good to me, and you’ll have the girls on Duble’s team to be there–the soccer girls (my sister was one) work so hard that they become close.
