Oh, Where To Live

I know that many of you who have applied to Covenant will be starting your housing forms soon if you haven’t already. The forms can be a bit stressful as you try and decide what next year is going to look like. Do you want to live in a 2 person room or a 4 person room, do you want to live in Andreas or Founders, etc. If any of you are like me I was no able to come and visit Covenant before I got here and really had no idea what to do with the housing form so I thought hat I would give a little bit of an overview of dorms and room-mates in hopes to help you guys out a little.

Covenant has four dorms. They all have Freshman-Seniors in them and there are baseball players, basketball players, tennis players, etc spread throughout all of them as well. So how do you decide where to go? Well I want to first let you know that the committee that decides on housing is a very wise one. They work very hard, and most often succeed, at finding the best living situations. I know I was so impressed with their rooming assignments when I was a freshman, those girls will forever be life long friends.

The oldest dorm we have is Carter. Carter is often thought as home base for Covenant College. This is the dorm where Covenant started; therefore it has a lot of character and beautiful views overlooking Chattanooga. This dorm also has the Cafeteria in it. The rooms are set up much like hotels rooms. The bathrooms are connected to the rooms and there is a closet that you and your roommates normally share. Carter is often seen as the social dorm. People love that the doors are often left open.

Next is Founders. Founders is a dorm with quite a lot of character as well. I see that dorm as holding a lot of Covenant’s talent, from muscisians to artists. Founders has community bathrooms. So it often feels more like the typical dorm. It’s known for having a lot of dorm community. The halls in this dorm have commons for meetings, studying, etc. And most of these commons have kitchens in them.

Then there’s Maclellen/Rymer. This building’s rooms are slightly bigger than the rest because they are sweet style. This means that your 2/3/4 person room will be connected with another 2 person room. The rooms will connect by a study room and a bathroom. The study rooms are nice if some of your room mates are headed to bed and you need to study longer. In this dorm each individual get their own closet. Maclellen too has a commons for each hall with a kitchen.

Lastly, there’s our newest building Andreas. It was just build a year ago. This dorm has suite style rooms as well, but instead of having a bathroom and a study room connecting the rooms there is just a bathroom. The beds in the Andreas building can loft, which is great for storage. There is one large closet that you share with your room-mate. These dorms have a large commons area as well, however they do not have kitchens in them. Instead in the downstairs lobby there is a kitchen that the whole dorm can use.

So there it is, each dorm described. Now there are some things that all the dorms have in common. For example they all have computer labs open 24 hours, they all have bottom lobbies where students can hang out and study, and they all have laundry mats. So what’s your preference?

As you decide about how many room-mates you should have, I think the best thing to do is to make a list of priorities. What is most important to you? I lived in a 5 person room my freshman year and this year I live in a 2 person. The two are drastically different. A two person room provides a better environment for studying. Also if you need alone time every once in a while this caters more to that. In a five person room you are very rarely ever alone in the room. You find alternative places to go and study and must me more flexible when it comes to shower times, when lights can be on, when they need to be off, etc. However, in a larger room they often become your family.

Well, I hope this helps a little bit guys. And don’t worry about it too much. Remember when you’re feeling out the housing form to just try and prioritize what you want most in a room-mate. Please shoot me any questions you guys might have. But in the end guys, God already knows where he’s going to place you next year, and trust me he’s going to work in you no matter where you’re at!

  2. Hello Sheryce!
I was looking around the blogs for a post just like this! I’m trying to fill out housing forms today, and am in a major quandary. This helped so so much. It’s also encouraging to be reminded that God has control of this situation. Thank you!
