One Last Mountain Affair

Written by Sheryce Butkowski on October 3rd, 2009

So I just got back from my fourth Mountain Affair here at Covenant. Boy, does the event never cease to amaze me. This weekend is Campus Preview Weekend. Meaning that many students who are interested in Covenant come and stay for the weekend to get a glimpse of what it’s really like here. This year we had over two hundred and fifty previewers coming to Covenant. Which is so exciting!

However, it also means that Mountain Affair, an event that is usually packed out with an overflow room was going to be all that more full! I’m not complaining though, that’s part of its novelty. Student’s start lining up at the doors of the chapel two hours before it starts so that they are sure to get a seat. Then when the time comes for them to finally open the doors we all push through the small entrances and claim our chairs. Covenant staff has learned over the years though. They know that it is a must to stagger our entry into the chapel and to only allow us to save one seat. So anyways, this year was definitely even more crazy then most, but it was that much more fun.

A little description of Mountain Affair: Mountain Affair is pretty much a glorified talent show. Over sixty acts tryout to participate in Mountain Affair and only twelve get it. This year we had everything from juggling to dancing to singing to saxophone playing.

I especially fell in love with the saxophone act. I could be a bit bias however, since the student playing was a guy from our brother hall. But he did so well! I heard people talking about how impressive he was even before the night, and I was not disappointed as he blew us all away with his jazzy ensemble. After playing he was met with a standing ovation. The crowd loved him. In the end though, he got second place. Being only a freshman, he still has three more years though to blow Covenant away.

The first place winners were very impressive as well. They wrote and played a song about two astronauts in love. I can’t even phantom how students can come up with such talented music. So it was yet another night of me sitting there, totally in awe of the gift God has given people around me. I think because I have such a lack of talent, I appreciate and admire those who have it so much more. What a night!

So guys, if you are interested in Covenant, I encourage you to come to the fall Campus Preview Weekend. Mountain Affair is always during this time and it won’t disappoint!

  1. Hi Sheryce

As a teacher I have been reading your blog with great interest. The Mountain talent show sounds like a fantastic opportunity for everyone to bond outside the classroom.

Teaching and learning is such a noble passtime, but we often forget this with the huge amount of things to be done and all the diverse learning styles sitting there in one room, not to mention everyone’s individual needs.

It can be highly exhausting but never boring!
